Your Highest Excitement, and Everyone Else's Too

Somewhere along the way, many people absorb the idea that creativity, imagination, and play are luxuries — nice extras, permitted only once the serious business of survival is fully handled, and even then, treated a little guiltily. Worth questioning that idea directly, because it gets something important backwards.

Following what genuinely excites you — a craft, an idea, a form of expression that makes you feel most fully alive — is not a distraction from a sovereign life. It is one of the clearest expressions of one. A person who has never been permitted, by themselves or by anyone else, to explore what genuinely lights them up is a person whose full humanity has been quietly narrowed down to function alone. Survival matters enormously, and this is not a case for ignoring it. It's a case for noticing that survival was never meant to be the entire ceiling of a life, only its floor.

This connects to something practical and worth naming directly: societies and systems that discourage genuine self-expression — that expect uniformity, obedience, and narrow conformity rather than real creative contribution — tend, over time, to produce populations less capable of the very imagination needed to solve their own problems. Innovation, resilience, and the ability to imagine a genuinely different future all draw from the same well as creativity and play. Starving that well doesn't just cost individuals their joy. It costs a whole community its capacity to picture anything better than what already exists.

And there's a responsibility folded quietly into this freedom, worth naming plainly: following your own highest excitement only remains a healthy practice if it protects everyone else's room to do the same. A creativity that expresses itself by diminishing, controlling, or crowding out someone else's isn't creative freedom — it's simply domination wearing a more attractive name. Genuine self-expression makes more room in the world, for you and for the people around you, rather than less.
