Wealth Is Not the Same Thing as Money
Money is just a token for moving value around. Wealth is the actual value — and it's easy to have plenty of one while starving for the other.
It's worth separating two words that get used as if they mean the same thing, because confusing them leads to some genuinely costly decisions.
Money is a token — a widely accepted stand-in that lets you trade what you have for what you need without both parties happening to want exactly what the other is offering at exactly the same moment. It is useful precisely because it's abstract and portable. But it is not, itself, the thing that sustains a life. You cannot eat it, live in it, or be cared for by it directly. It only works by being converted into things that actually do those jobs.
Wealth is closer to the real thing underneath the token. A skill that lets you solve a problem someone will pay for. Health that lets you actually use your days rather than spend them recovering. Relationships strong enough that you're genuinely cared for in a hard season, not just transactionally tolerated in a good one. Land or tools that keep producing value on their own, season after season, long after the initial effort to acquire them. Knowledge passed down that saves you from re-learning an expensive lesson the hard way.
It's entirely possible to hold a large amount of money and very little real wealth — spent as fast as it arrives, with nothing left standing once it's gone: no skill built, no health protected, no relationship deepened, nothing left producing value on its own. It's also possible to hold very little money and genuine wealth — a person with real skill, real health, real community, and real land or tools, who can rebuild quickly even after a serious financial setback, because the actual foundations were never only made of money in the first place.
This distinction matters for a household deciding what to prioritise with a difficult budget. It matters for a community deciding whether to measure its own progress purely by cash flowing through it, or by the skills, health, and relationships actually being built among its people. And it matters for a country deciding whether growth on paper is translating into anything that actually holds up a person's life, or simply moving faster through more hands without leaving much behind in any of them.
Money should be treated the way it actually functions — a useful tool for moving wealth around. Never mistaken for the wealth itself.
Money moves value. It was never meant to be the value.
